Son Doong, Paradise Cave, Dark Cave—I have explored them all. But the true magic of Phong Nha lies in the simple moments beside the river, in homestays, and under the stars.

There are destinations that you visit once, tick off your travel list, and move on.

Then there are places that continue to call you back.

For me, Phong Nha Vietnam has always been one of those places.

After more than twenty years working in Vietnam's tourism industry and over ten years leading travellers across Vietnam and Southeast Asia, I have been fortunate to visit hundreds of remarkable destinations—from the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay to the mountain villages of Ha Giang, from the temples of Angkor to the beaches of Thailand.

Yet every time I return to Quang Binh Province, I discover something completely new.

Perhaps that is the magic of Phong Nha.

    It never stops surprising you.

My First Journey to Phong Nha

I first visited Phong Nha around 2010 while leading international travellers throughout Vietnam.

Back then, the destination was already famous for its incredible limestone mountains, underground rivers, and magnificent caves.

Every group I guided left amazed.

Even after visiting dozens of countries, many guests told me they had never seen landscapes quite like this.

At that time, Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave were the highlights, while Son Doong had only recently begun attracting worldwide attention.

Little did I know that I would return many times over the following years.

Each visit revealed another hidden corner waiting to be explored.

    Returning After the Pandemic

Four years after the COVID pandemic changed the world, I finally had the opportunity to return.

    This time was different.

Rather than leading a large tour group, I came with my own family.

Travelling more slowly allowed me to appreciate the peaceful rhythm of life along the Son River.

We stayed in a lovely riverside homestay where mornings began with birds singing, mist floating over the water, and fishermen quietly rowing their boats.

It reminded me why so many travellers fall in love with this place.

Phong Nha is not only about caves.

It is also about slowing down.

The Adventure I Will Never Forget – Exploring Zozo Cave

One of the greatest adventures of my career happened here.

Several years ago, I joined an expedition to explore Zozo Cave.

Unlike the more accessible tourist caves, Zozo demanded real adventure.

We crawled through narrow limestone passages.

    We swam across underground rivers.

    We climbed slippery rocks.

Wearing helmets with powerful headlamps, we ventured into complete darkness where the only sounds were dripping water and our own breathing.

We spent the night camping deep inside the forest.

    There were no hotels.

    No internet.

    No phone signal.

    Only nature.

The silence inside the jungle after sunset is something difficult to describe.

    Millions of stars above us.

The sounds of insects echoing through the mountains.

    Fresh air unlike anywhere else.

It reminded me why adventure travel changes people.

    You leave your comfort zone.

    You reconnect with nature.

    You discover your own limits.

Son Doong – The World's Greatest Cave

No visit to Quang Binh would be complete without mentioning Son Doong.

Recognised as the largest cave in the world, Son Doong is much more than simply a cave.

It is an entirely different world hidden beneath the mountains.

Inside are enormous chambers capable of holding skyscrapers.

Ancient underground rivers continue to shape the landscape.

Massive stalagmites rise from the cave floor like natural monuments.

Even more incredible are the gigantic skylights where sunlight pours through collapsed sections of the cave ceiling, allowing an ancient rainforest to flourish deep underground.

It feels like stepping into another planet.

Although permits are limited and the expedition requires excellent physical fitness, Son Doong remains one of the world's most extraordinary adventure experiences.

Paradise Cave Still Takes My Breath Away

Every time I visit Paradise Cave, I wonder how nature could create something so beautiful.

Walking along the elevated wooden pathways, visitors pass thousands of spectacular stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years.

Each chamber reveals different natural sculptures shaped only by water and time.

Photographs simply cannot capture its scale.

You need to stand there yourself.

    Look upwards.

    Remain silent.

And appreciate what nature has created over millions of years.

    Beyond the Caves

Many travellers think Phong Nha is only about caves.

In reality, it offers far more.

Some of my favourite experiences include:

    • Taking a peaceful boat cruise along the beautiful Son River.
    • Kayaking through crystal-clear rivers surrounded by limestone mountains.
    • Cycling through quiet villages and rice fields inside the national park.
    • Swimming in natural streams and lagoons.
    • Flying across rivers on exciting zipline adventures.
    • Visiting the famous Dark Cave for mud bathing and underground exploration.
    • Enjoying local Vietnamese coffee beside the river.
    • Watching sunset from a small riverside café.
    • Staying with local families in charming homestays.
    • Sampling Quang Binh's delicious local cuisine, including fresh river fish, grilled chicken, and traditional specialties.

Sometimes the best memories come not from famous attractions, but from simple moments spent watching life slowly unfold beside the river.

    Wellness in Nature

After years of organising holidays for travellers from Canada, Australia, the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia, I have realised something.

Luxury is no longer about expensive hotels.

    Real luxury is peace.

    Phong Nha offers exactly that.

    Wake up surrounded by birdsong.

    Practise yoga overlooking the river.

    Enjoy fresh local food.

Walk through forests filled with ancient trees.

    Listen to flowing water.

    Disconnect from your phone.

    Reconnect with yourself.

For anyone seeking wellness through nature, few places in Vietnam can compare.

    Why I Keep Coming Back

People often ask me which destination in Vietnam is my favourite.

It is a difficult question because Vietnam has so many incredible places

    .

But Phong Nha will always hold a special place in my heart.

Every visit teaches me something new.

Every journey reveals another hidden cave.

Every season paints the landscape differently.

And every return reminds me why I chose tourism as my lifelong career.

Even after twenty years, Vietnam continues to surprise me.

That is the greatest gift of travel.

My Recommended Experiences in Phong Nha

If you have three to five days, I would recommend:

    • Explore Paradise Cave.
    • Cruise through Phong Nha Cave by traditional boat.
    • Experience the Dark Cave adventure with zipline and mud cave.
    • Join an adventure trek to Hang En, Hang Va, or another expedition cave.
    • Visit the world-famous Son Doong (subject to permit availability).
    • Kayak on the Son River.
    • Cycle through villages and the national park.
    • Stay in a riverside homestay instead of rushing through.
    • Enjoy local food with friendly villagers.
    • Watch sunrise and sunset over the peaceful river.

These experiences combine adventure, nature, culture, and relaxation—the perfect balance for discovering one of Vietnam's greatest natural treasures.

Travel with Those Who Know Vietnam

Having spent more than twenty years working in Vietnam's tourism industry and over a decade personally guiding travellers across the country, I believe the most memorable journeys are not about seeing more places.

They are about creating meaningful experiences.

At AVT Travel, we love introducing travellers to destinations like Phong Nha—not only through famous attractions, but through local stories, hidden gems, authentic encounters, and unforgettable adventures.

I hope one day I can welcome you here and share this remarkable corner of Vietnam with you.

    See you in Phong Nha.
