Tonle Sap Lake
Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, is home to remarkable floating villages where houses, schools, and markets rise and fall with the water levels. The main villages accessible from Siem Reap are Chong Kneas (closest but most touristy), Kampong Phluk (known for stilted houses and mangrove forests), and Kampong Khleang (the largest and most authentic). For nature lovers, the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary is a must-visit for rare waterbirds.
Tips: Visit during the wet season (June to October) when the villages truly float and the scenery is most picturesque. Bring sun protection, water, and a camera. The lake is about 1.5 hours from Siem Reap by road, and tours typically include a boat ride.
