Siem Reap, the gateway to the ancient Khmer empire, is best known for the magnificent Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument. Beyond this iconic temple, the must-see list includes the enigmatic smiling faces of Bayon within the walled city of Angkor Thom, and the jungle-clad Ta Prohm, famously entwined with massive tree roots from the movie Tomb Raider. To experience local life on the water, take a boat tour to the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, and in the evening, explore the lively Old Market (Psar Chaa) or the Angkor Night Market for handicrafts and street food.
For a smooth visit, aim to arrive by 5:00 AM to secure a prime spot for the iconic sunrise over Angkor Wat, but be prepared for crowds. Dress modestly with your shoulders and knees covered, as it is a sacred site. The temple grounds are vast and require a lot of walking on uneven stone, so pack comfortable, sturdy shoes, plenty of water, and sun protection.
