On September 16, at the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago have been recognized by UNESCO as world heritage with a total area of 770.7 km, including stunning 1,163 islands and a water basin.

Earlier, UNESCO recognized the Cat Ba archipelago in 2004 as a Man and Biosphere Reserve Area as a world biosphere reserve, and UNESCO named Ha Long Bay in neighboring Quang Ninh Province as a world heritage site twice in 1994 and 2000.
