Ninh Binh: The story of King Dinh Tien Hoang

Hoa Lu ancient capital is located in the south area of the Red River delta and in the heart of Ninh Binh city. This was the capital of Vietnam under Dinh and Early Le dynasties. Hoa Lu ancient capital is strongly associated with the creation of the Dinh dynasty and an important figure in Vietnamese history – King Dinh Tien Hoang (as known as Dinh Bo Linh) who was the founder of the Dinh dynasty after the decline of the Ngo dynasty in the tenth century.

King Dinh Tien Hoang was the one who united the country after resolving the domestic anarchy through the competition of twelve feudal warlords for control of the country and the external threats from the enemy in the north represented by Southern Han. The reason why King Dinh Tien Hoang choose Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh to be the capital at the moment time is the terrain surrounded by mountains and marshlands. He believes that the geographical characteristics of Hoa Lu can be beneficial in protecting and prevent for the country from external threats.

Ninh Binh: Hoa Lu and visiting ideas

Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam (or Dai Co Viet – the name of Vietnam at that historical period) for 41 years, from 968 to 1009, before Ly Cong Uan (as known as Ly Thai To) decided to move the capital to Thang Long (currently known as Hanoi). When visiting Hoa Lu ancient capital nowadays, you can understand deeper the history of the two dynasties by visiting the temple worshipping the Kings of Dinh and Early Le dynasties. Also, you can understand deeper the story of Dinh Bo Linh when controlled by the twelve feudal warlords by visiting Thien Ton cave – the location famous for the myth about the oracle to resolve the civil war. Furthermore, the history is also illustrated through the architecture of the building inside the complex and the annual festival organized in the third month after the Lunar New Year.

Ninh Binh: Bai Dinh Temple Complex and religious culture

Located in Ba Rau Hills in the neighborhood of Hoang Long River, The New Bai Dinh Temple was constructed in an area of approximately 700ha. Built and finished after seven years of construction since 2003, Bai Dinh Temple amazes tourists with the majesty and maestoso of the complex. Besides, The New Bai Dinh Temple has been recognized with 6 records, including the highest Buddhist Stupa in Asia.

The original temple is located close to the new temple at a distance of 800m. In order to reach this temple, tourists and pilgrimages have to ascend over 300 steps.
